Are The New York Yankees The Team To Beat In The American League?

The Major League Baseball season is just one week old. You know what that means? It is the perfect time for some way-too-early season overreactions — or maybe this isn’t an overreaction.

After a hot start to the season, are the New York Yankees the team to beat in the American League?

The Yankees had an interesting offseason. They made a blockbuster deal for Juan Soto and added Alex Verdugo and Marcus Stroman as well. Other than that, the Yankees kept its roster in tact. New York was expected to compete coming into the season but impressed in a big way in Houston.

The Yankees began the season against American League rival Houston Astros. New York dominated a four-game series and escaped Houston with a sweep. The Yankees went onto Arizona to win their first game of the series to improve to 5-0. The Bronx is buzzing just one week into the season as Soto has exploded out of the gate.

Soto has 10 hits in his first 24 at-bats in Pinstripes for a .417 batting average. He has one home run, four RBI, and five walks. Soto is also playing tremendous defense, highlighted by gunning down a runner at home plate in the season-opener to keep a one-run lead safe in the ninth inning. Yankee fans are getting the full experience just one week into the season.

Aaron Judge is off to a slow start. He is just 3-for-24 to begin the season with seven strikeouts. The good news is that he has remained on the field early. If Judge is healthy, he will eventually work his way out of a slump. The other positive is that Soto is around to pick up the slack, ad vice versa when needed.

The question mark with the Yankees coming into the season was pitching. Through one rotation, Marcus Stroman and Carlos Rodon looked effective and can improve as the year goes on. But it can also go the other way as well. Nestor Cortes has struggled out of the gate through two starts. The short answer here is, no one knows how this staff will perform over the course of 162 games.

It is clear that the Yankees have renewed energy and are playing at a high level early. Is this enough to make them the team to beat in the AL? It is too early to say. Vibes are high in the Bronx and they should be but the Yankees will have to show that there is consistency and health this season.
