WrestleMania 40 Predictions

We are finally here! WrestleMania Weekend is upon us and we have TWO massive nights in store, in what’s billed to be the biggest WrestleMania of all time! Here is how the card breaks down for both Saturday and Sunday night, as well as a prediction from yours truly on what to expect for an unpredictable event!

NIGHT 1

Women’s World Championship: Rhea Ripley (champion) vs. Becky Lynch — Ripley won this championship at last year’s WrestleMania against Charlotte Flair and has held a death grip on the women’s division. Becky Lynch had her WrestleMania moment five years ago and ranked in the top 20 of the greatest WrestleMania moments ever. Lynch has been out of the title picture all year for this epic clash at WrestleMania. This likely opens Night 1, but give me WWE rewarding Becky Lynch for her hard work with another WrestleMania moment and championship reign.

Intercontinental Championship: Gunther (champion) vs. Sami Zayn — Gunther is the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in company history, entering this match over 660 days. The build to this match has been under the Rocky movie theme. Chad Gable, one of Gunther’s rivals, has been preparing Sami Zayn to dethrone Gunther as champion. It is Philadelphia and home of the Rocky narrative, while Gunther is more than ready to enter the main event scene. Losing his title needs to be at a big premium live event, but I don’t believe it’s to Sami Zayn. Give me Gunther retaining as he approaches 700 days.

6-Pack Ladder Match for the RAW & SmackDown Tag Team Championships: The Judgment Day (Damian Priest & Finn Balor; champions) vs. Awesome Truth (The Miz & R-Truth) vs. #DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) vs. Austin Theory & Grayson Waller vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) vs. New Catch Republic (Pete Dunne & Tyler Bate) — The tag team championships have been unified since the summer of 2022 when The Usos defeated Randy Orton and Matt Riddle. While we’ve had matches for the “Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships,” Michael Cole made it clear this was for both the Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Championships and the match wouldn’t conclude until both sets of titles were retrieved. This has my curiosity flowing… what if two teams win this match and we finally split the tag titles once again? When I begged WWE to split the tag team titles because of the stacked tag team divisions, this could be the moment fans have been waiting for!

R-Truth has never had a WrestleMania moment and is doing some of his best character work in his career. Giving R-Truth, at 55 years old, his WrestleMania moment would be ideal. As I mentioned on the Drop the Mike Wrestling Podcast this week, R-Truth could lean into his character and retrieve only one set, believing he won the titles, just for another team to retrieve the other set, like Austin Theory and Grayson Waller. R-Truth and The Miz could be the Raw Tag Team Champions, while Austin Theory and Grayson Waller could have a short stint as SmackDown Tag Team Champions.

Brother vs. Brother: Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso — We are getting this match because of Roman Reigns, as I mentioned in the article regarding the legacy of Roman Reigns. The Usos main evented Night 1 of WrestleMania last year and after a similar buildup we had for Dominik versus Rey Mysterio, we’re finally getting the first one-on-one match with the twin brothers pit against each other. In reality, this is their dream match, from wrestling in the living room to growing up in the Anoa’i family to a match at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia at WrestleMania. To help build Jey Uso’s nickname as the “Main Event,” I expect this brother to emerge victorious and a potential truce at the end.

Tag Team Match: Rey Mysterio & Andrade vs. Dominik Mysterio & Santos Escobar — This match had Dragon Lee on the show up until Friday’s SmackDown, where Lee is attacked. This led to Andrade turning on Dominik and Santos to be announced as Rey Mysterio’s tag team partner. Last year, Rey Mysterio wrestled his son Dominik in a classic match. Now, we get that in another variation with the emergence of Santos Escobar in the previous year and Andrade’s return to the company in January. This will be an exciting match. I’m not entirely convinced Dragon Lee or Carlito couldn’t get involved, and perhaps Carlito or Andrade turns on Rey Mysterio. Swapping Dragon Lee for Andrade this late has me questioning the result, so I’m changing my pick for Dominik and Santos to win with Andrade turning on Rey Mysterio, only for Andrade and Zelina Vega to realign. Andrade needs a mouthpiece and Zelina is perfect for it.

6-Woman Tag Team Match: Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill & Naomi vs. Damage CTRL (Asuka, Dakota Kai & Kairi Sane) — Damage CTRL is undoubtedly the strongest women’s faction in wrestling history, especially when you consider Bayley and Iyo Sky doing battle on Night 2 for the WWE Women’s Championship. However, Damage CTRL is going up against one of the biggest draws for the women’s division in Bianca Belair, as well as a returning Naomi and a debuting Jade Cargill. There’s too much star power on the other side of the ring, so give me Belair’s team to emerge victorious.

Night 1 Main Event: Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns & The Rock — MAJOR implications for Night 2 are on the line for this match. If Roman and Rock win, it’ll be Bloodline Rules and anything goes Night 2. If Cody and Seth win, it’ll be a 1-on-1 fair fight for Cody Rhodes on Sunday. This is huge because the Bloodline was heavily involved in Cody’s loss at WrestleMania 39. This could go either way. Cody could pin The Rock for momentum leading into Sunday with some miscommunication between The Rock and Roman Reigns, or Seth could get pinned with Drew McIntyre getting involved. Personally, I want to see Bloodline Rules because that leads to more chaos on Sunday night.

NIGHT 2

World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins (champion) vs. Drew McIntyre — Seth Rollins wrestled his first televised match on Monday’s Raw after his torn meniscus and MCL injury this past January. Now he competes back-to-back nights and the entire story is centered around Seth Rollins underestimating a hungry Drew McIntyre. McIntyre won the WWE Championship four years ago at WrestleMania in front of zero fans, so he feels robbed for not winning the world title and having a true WrestleMania Moment with people, so he’s doing any means necessary to accomplish this. CM Punk will be at commentary and he has beef with both men, along with Damian Priest lurking with the Money in the Bank. I believe this is enough for Rollins to lose his championship, while McIntyre gets cashed in on by Priest either immediately after or the following night on Raw. McIntyre will have his moment, but it’ll be taken away by Damian Priest.

WWE Women’s Championship: Iyo Sky (champion) vs. Bayley — I mentioned during Night 1, Damage CTRL has been on a run and that’s all because Bayley brought Iyo Sky back at SummerSlam 2022. Last year, Iyo Sky had an incredible showing against Bianca Belair that put her on the map, so she could later win the Women’s Money in the Bank briefcase to cash in and become the champion. Now Damage CTRL has turned their back on Bayley. Bayley hasn’t been a babyface since 2019 and now has the chance to have her WrestleMania Moment and win the big one in a stadium… and she does. Bayley is your new champion.

Singles Match: AJ Styles vs. LA Knight — A year ago, LA Knight was unjustly not a part of WrestleMania in Los Angeles. Now, he has a premium singles match against “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles who always delivers for WrestleMania matches. This could be LA Knight’s showcase that not only can he talk, but he can go in the ring with one of the most talented wrestlers of our generation. LA Knight loses but impresses people. We might even see the start of a new Bullet Club in WWE, with potentially the Good Brothers or recently-signed Tama Tonga aiding AJ Styles with a win.

United States Championship: Logan Paul (champion) vs. Kevin Owens vs. Randy Orton — The casual fan would know Logan Paul from his YouTube ventures, or Randy Orton because of his famous RKO finisher. Kevin Owens was in the main event last year with Sami Zayn and won the tag team titles to have their special moment, which we covered here on Fans First Sports Network. Paul brings a new audience with WrestleMania easily available on Peacock, but hopefully, he loses the championship. Imagine Orton hitting a memorable RKO on an airborne Logan Paul, capturing another WrestleMania moment, and Orton walking away as champion after his career nearly ended with a back injury 18 months ago.

Philadelphia Street Fight: The Final Testament (Karrion Kross, Akam & Rezar) vs. The Pride (Bobby Lashley, Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) — Anything goes in a Philly Street Fight! These two groups have been feuding for months and I’m excited they have time at WrestleMania to settle their differences. Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits (Dawkins and Ford) are established as multi-time world and tag team champions. On the opposite side, the Final Testament is establishing who they are with the WWE Universe and needs this win more. It would be a mistake to have The Final Testament lose this match.

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (champion) vs. Cody Rhodes — We mentioned this match will be heavily influenced by Night 1’s result. The big question: is Cody Rhodes the right guy and is WrestleMania 40 the right moment to take this championship off Roman Reigns and end this historic run? Is there still “meat on the bones” in regards to Roman’s title run? Roman has mentioned he’ll leave if he loses to Cody this weekend, whether that be a retirement or just for a little while. Cody already failed once, can he fail again? Could this lead to a future showdown between Roman Reigns and The Rock? There are so many questions WWE has to confidently answer before Sunday. You can’t take anything back after Sunday and have to live with your choices.

With that said, after watching the previous four-year run of The Bloodline, Cody’s improbable WWE return, documentaries covering the stories of both Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, and everything in between, I am 60% confident Roman Reigns retains this Sunday and continues to chase Hulk Hogan’s reign as WWE Champion.

WrestleMania 40 airs on Peacock this Saturday and Sunday night beginning at 7 pm ET. If you have never watched WWE, or haven’t in a while, I highly recommend letting yourself be entertained by this spectacle. It’ll be a night we will remember for a long time.
