What To Know About Paul Skenes Ahead Of MLB Debut

The Pittsburgh Pirates have finally made the decision. They are calling up Paul Skenes to make his MLB debut on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs.

The Pirates selected the big right-hander out of LSU with the first-overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. After much speculation about whether Skenes would make the Opening Day roster, Pittsburgh decided to send him down to Triple-A.

Now, the best pitching prospect in a decade will make his debut. There are few pitchers in recent memory that were more ready out of college than Skenes. This list features names such as Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strausburg.

Below, check out everything you need to know about Paul Skenes.

  • Age: 21
  • B/T: R/R
  • Height: 6’6
  • Weight: 235
  • College: LSU
  • High School: El Toro
  • Hometown: Fullerton, CA

Paul Skenes dominated at LSU during its run to a National Championship. He tossed 122 2/3 innings. He pitched to a 13-2 record with a 1.69 ERA with 209 strikeouts and 20 walks. The Pirates opted for the right-hander over his teammate at LSU and outfielder Dylan Crews.

The young pitching for Pittsburgh looks promising. It begins with Mitch Keller, who signed a five-year extension this offseason. Pittsburgh has also featured Jared Jones, who was a second-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2020 amateur draft.

Skenes will now join the rotation after dominating Triple-A ball. He started seven games, allowing just three total runs in 27 1/3 innings with 45 strikeouts.

Skenes did not throw more than 75 pitches in any of his seven starts in the minor leagues. If Jones is any indication, the Pirates will likely take it slow with Skenes. There has been limits put on Jones during his time in the big leagues, despite of score or situation within the game. Since Skenes has not reached the 75-pitch mark yet this season, the Pirates might implement something similar.

Pirates fans will have something new to cheer about this season. Skenes is set to make his much-anticipated debut on Saturday and baseball fans will be glued to the screen.
