5 Potential Options For The New York Jets Following Aaron Rodgers Injury

The New York Jets might have beaten the Buffalo Bills on Monday night but they suffered a major loss in the first quarter.

Aaron Rodgers limped off the field after just four snaps in a Jets’ uniform and did not return. On Tuesday, it was confirmed with what many already knew — Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the remainder of the season. For a team like the Jets, who believed they had a chance Super Bowl title this season, where do they go from here?

Below, check out five options where New York could go to replace Rodgers for the remainder of the season.

5. Move Forward With Zach Wilson

Wilson relieved Rodgers on Monday night and helped lead the Jets to a victory. Or at least he was under center and leaned on the defense tremendously. Wilson finished 14-for-21 for 140 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Side note, the touchdown pass was way off track and it took one of the best catches you’ll ever see from Garrett Wilson to tie the game. Wilson was brought back to be second string behind Rodgers after two horrific years. Now, it is a question mark whether this team can win with him. If there is no one else out there, Wilson will be the guy moving forward.

4. Carson Wentz

Wentz would have won the MVP award in 2017 if he did not get hurt. Now, he is not on an NFL roster after a few stops around the league. If you’re a Jets’ fan, this is not an attractive option. Wentz led the league with 15 interceptions in 2020 before going to the Indianapolis Colts. After one year in Indy, he was given a chance in Washington and that was a failure as well. Nonetheless, he is a veteran who is looking for a job and interested in returning to the NFL.

3. Trade For/Sign A Veteran

Tom Brady is not coming, despite it being a fun thought. There are many names out there that can be traded for or signed in free agency. Potential trade candidates could include Jacoby Brissett (Washington), Tyrod Taylor (New York), or Davis Mills (Houston). It seems unlikely that Atlanta would part ways with Taylor Heinicke due to the uncertainty of Desmond Ridder. In free agency, Cam Newton remains available. Joe Flacco. Yes, these are not the best options because if they were, they’d be in a better situation.

2. Jameis Winston

Winston has turned into a hot name early on. He is currently in New Orleans serving as the backup to Derek Carr. Everyone remembers his 30 touchdown, 30 interception season in Tampa Bay but Winston had some good moments in New Orleans before a knee injury got him off the field. In 2021, Winston threw 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He is an experienced quarterback who might be available in a trade. The Saints moved onto Carr and drafted Jake Haener in the fourth round. Oh, and we know that Winston would be able to handle the New York media and bring plenty of entertainment.

1. Matt Ryan

Ryan was just in the CBS broadcast booth during Week 1 of the season but he has yet to file his retirement papers. If a team came calling, Ryan might jump at the opportunity. Let’s not forget that he was on a roster last season and has remained in football shape. Ryan is a former MVP of the league and led the Falcons to a Super Bowl. Of course, we all know how that one ended. So, who would you believe in? A young quarterback who has failed over and over again or a former MVP? There are man who might say Wilson but if the Jets decide to move on, Ryan should be at the top of the list.
