Steelers Free Agent Targets: Safety

There are many safeties available in free agency and they are not costing a ton of money. I could easily list 5 or more safeties that make sense for the Steelers to go after. To me the biggest priority with bringing in a safety isn’t even about the actually person you bring in but more so how do they effect Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Steelers need somebody that allows Minkah to play the role he is most effective and that is in the “robber” role. Mikah needs to be able to have more freedom of where he plays and a lot less near the line of scrimmage. Not knowing what will happen with Demontae Kazee, this after the team released Keanu Neal, here are some of the safeties the Steelers should be interested in:

CJ Gardner-Johnson

  • Although CJ Gardner-Johnson is coming off of a disappointing year tearing his pectoral muscle in week 5, he did return for the Lions playoff run even grabbing an interception off of Baker Mayfield. Gardner-Johnson brings playoff experience from and was a part of the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl team in 2022. For his career, Gardner-Johnson has 245 Tackles, 199 Solo, 4 Sacks, 12 Ints, 39 Passes Defended. He is physical enough to play near the line of scrimmage and also a ball hawk on the back end.

Terrell Edmunds

  • Bring’em Back? Half of Steelers Nation wanted Terrell Edmunds out of Pittsburgh and I was one who wanted him to stay. Edmunds does a lot of the dirty work that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, he allowed Minkah to “do that Minkah sh*t”. He didn’t have “splash” numbers but he was consistent, productive and always available. For his career, Edmunds has 458 Tackles, 310 Solo, 7.5 Sacks, 6 Ints, 28 Passes Defended. Terrell is familiar with the Steelers defense and how they operate, he also will not be expensive.

Again I say one of the biggest priorities in bringing in a safety is to allow Minkah Fitzpatrick to get back to the All-Pro level play we are accustom to. If we can bring in a player that can create splash on their own, that would be an added bonus. I wouldn’t even be opposed to bring in both of these players, you could bring consistency and splash.
