Steelers exchange a wide receiver and punter for a cornerbacker on the practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to shape their 2023 practice squad. In a move announced on Wednesday, the Steelers have signed wide receiver Jalen Camp to the practice squad and released cornerback Kalon Barnes.

Camp was a 2021 sixth-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Georgia Tech. Failing to make the Jaguars team his rookie season, Camp landed on the Houston Texans practice squad where he was elevated for three games with one start but no offensive statistics. Camp remained on the Texans practice squad in 2022 where he was elevated for two games where he had one reception for 7 yards on one target.

Spending the 2023 preseason with the Houston Texans once again, Camp appeared in all three preseason games where he had seven targets with only one reception for 11 yards. Camp did not make the Texans 53-man roster and was not signed the practice squad to start the season.

Despite having an open spot on the practice squad due to wide receiver Simi Fehoko being poached by the Los Angeles Chargers, the Steelers released cornerback Kalon Barnes. Signed ahead of the Steelers Week 2 matchup, Barnes only spent 10 days with the Steelers.

With the Steelers only having 15 players on the practice squad, look for them to make a move to add another player in the coming days.

UPDATE: The Steelers also announced on Wednesday that they have signed punter Brad Wing to the practice squad.

Wing was the punter for the Steelers during the 2014 season. Losing the job to Jordan Berry for the 2015 season, Wing was traded to the New York Giants for a seventh round draft pick. Wing punted for three seasons with the Giants and had the most punts in the NFL with 95 in 2017. Wing’s career regular season numbers are 325 punts with an average of 44.7 yards per punt with 100 kicks inside the 20-yard line and 27 touchbacks.

With punter Pressley Harvin III nursing a hamstring as stated by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in his press conference on Tuesday, bringing in Wing to the practice squad is a wise precautionary move in case Harvin’s issue keeps him playing this weekend.
