Steelers elevate 2 players from the practice squad for Week 5

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced their final roster moves ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens at Acrisure Stadium this Sunday at 1 PM. The Steelers have elevated two players from the practice squad in punter Brad Wing and offensive lineman Ryan McCollum.

With punter Pressley Harvin once again ruled out for the Steelers in Week 5, Wing is being called on for the second consecutive week to step in as the Steelers punter and holder. After being out of the NFL for five seasons, and not punting for the Steelers since 2014, Wing stepped in last week where he had five punts for an average of 47.6 yards per punt and only 14 return yards.

Having only seven offensive linemen healthy for Sunday’s game, the Steelers needed to add an eighth player in order to have 48 players active for the game. If a team does not have eight offensive linemen active, they are only permitted to have 46 players.

Having four offensive linemen on the practice squad to choose from, the Steelers elevated center Ryan McCallum. Undrafted out of Texas A&M in 2021, McCollum was signed by the Houston Texans and landed on their practice squad to start the season. In October, the Detroit Lions signed McCullum off the Texans practice squad where he appeared in 13 games with one start and played 101 offensive snaps. Waived during training camp in 2022, the Steelers claimed McCollum off waivers and he spent the 2022 season on the Steelers practice squad. With the Steelers through the 2023 preseason, McCollum did not make the 53-man roster but was later signed to the Steelers practice squad ahead of Week 2.

With no roster move coming which involved an outside linebacker, it appears Alex Highsmith will play on Sunday just as he stated to the media following Friday’s practice. With only four outside linebackers on the roster, the Steelers are likely thinking Highsmith will at least be available in some way even if it is not as many steps as he would typically see. If not, the Steelers likely would have made some kind of roster move at the position.
