Steelers and Kendrick Green could have special reunion Sunday

When the Pittsburgh Steelers took Kendrick Green in the 3rd Round out of Illinois, they thought they were getting a potential center of the future. Green potentially being the next in a long line of stellar centers to don the black-and-gold.

This project was deemed a massive failure, and after starting the vast majority of games his rookie season, Green was inactive for the entire 2021 campaign after the team signed Mason Cole at center and Green lost a battle at guard to Kevin Dotson.

After 2023 training camp both Green and Dotson are gone, with the Houston Texans sending a late round draft pick to Pittsburgh for Green’s services. Steelers fans rejoiced, and they likely never thought they’d see Green in a starting lineup again…until now.

When looking at the Texans’ current injury report, it is feasible Green could get the start due to several injuries along the offensive line. In other words, there is a strong chance Green is the starting left guard for the Texans when the Steelers go to Houston in Week 4.

Here is the Texans’ Wednesday injury report:

Wednesday, September 27
T Josh Jones (Hand) – DNP
LB Denzel Perryman (Hand/Wrist) – DNP
CB Tavierre Thomas (Hand) – DNP
T Laremy Tunsil (Knee) – DNP
WR Robert Woods (NIR) – DNP
WR Tank Dell (NIR) – Limited
T George Fant (NIR) – Limited
DE Jonathan Greenard (Knee) – Limited
CB Shaquill Griffin (Foot) – Limited
G Shaq Mason (Ankle) – Limited
S Jalen Pitre (Chest) – Limited
S Jimmie Ward (NIR) – Limited

The Texans could get some good news and find out one of their injured offensive linemen can play, relegating Green to back-up status, but you have to wonder how the Steelers feel about the potential of playing against their former teammate.

If Cam Heyward was in the lineup this could be a huge advantage for the Steelers, but with Heyward on Injured Reserve (IR) the focus will go to players like DeMarvin Leal, Keeanu Benton, Isaiahh Loudermilk and others who could flex to that side of the defensive front.

Steelers fans know this could be a huge mismatch problem for Houston, and one they’re gladly going to watch after seeing Green make blunder after blunder during his brief tenure with the Steelers.
