No Steelers free agents make ESPN’s Top 50 list, but plenty of targets remain

On Wednesday, March 13th the new NFL league year begins. Why is this significant? It’s when pending free agents can feel free to sign with whatever team they want. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, they have a long list of Unrestricted Free Agents (UFAs), and you can see that list below:

QB Mason Rudolph
ILB Kwon Alexander
S/ST Miles Killebrew
DT Montravius Adams
CB Levi Wallace
ILB Mykal Walker
WR Miles Boykin
OLB Markus Golden
CB Chandon Sullivan
S Elijah Riley
CB James Pierre
DT Armon Watts
ILB Blake Martinez

While the list might be long, it isn’t really littered with top talent about to hit the open market. In fact, ESPN recently put out their Top 50 free agents, and not one Steeler who finished the year in 2023 made the list. Before going any further, let’s take a look at who rounded out the Top 10 on the ESPN list:

1. Chris Jones, DT, Kansas City Chiefs
2. Josh Allen, EDGE, Jacksonville Jaguars
3. Kirk Cousins, QB, Minnesota Vikings
4. Justin Madubuike, DT, Baltimore Ravens
5. Christian Wilkins, DT, Miami Dolphins
6. Brian Burns, DE, Carolina Panthers
7. Tee Higgins, WR, Cincinnati Bengals
8. Danielle Hunter, EDGE, Minnesota Vikings
9. Jaylon Johnson, CB, Chicago Bears
10. Antoine Winfield Jr., S, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Steelers may not have a player on their current roster who is on the Top 50 list, but they do have a player they drafted, and traded, who made the list. That player would be none other than Kevin Doston.

24. Kevin Dotson, G, Los Angeles Rams

“After being traded from Pittsburgh in the 2023 offseason, Dotson put up the best tape of his career. He finished with a 92.4% pass block win rate and 73.5% run block win rate. A phone-booth brawler, he’s at his best in a gap run scheme.”

What’s interesting with this list is while the Steelers have no representative on the list, they absolutely will be looking at some of the names on the list as key additions at positions like OT, CB, ILB, and even QB. What position/player would you like to see them target?
