Desmond King beyond excited to join the Steelers

For a second, consider what some NFL players might be feeling as they get the news of being released from their respective teams. It has to be a horrible feeling of not only rejection, but failure. But sometimes, not every time, it can be followed with hope of a new start. And sometimes it comes with going to a better team.

I think it’s safe to say that is exactly what happened with cornerback Desmond King who spent training camp and the preseason with the Houston Texans, only to find himself on the outside looking in as Houston trimmed their roster to 53 players.

The Texans are a team in the midst of a rebuild, and King quickly found a new home in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the Steelers haven’t made the move official, King didn’t waste any time taking to social media to celebrate his new home. In fact, he called it a dream come true.

While the Steelers haven’t made the transaction official, King didn’t hesitate to make the move official on his own.

The Steelers are an iconic organization, and for some players being a part of the black-and-gold isn’t just a dream come true, but provides them a feeling of being in a perfect NFL home. King stated such on Twitter/X Wednesday evening.

King joins a cornerback room which could benefit from his veteran experience. He joins Patrick Peterson and Levi Wallace as the anchored veterans on the defense, but his experience will benefit players like Joey Porter Jr., James Pierre and Elijah Riley.

King’s NFL experience started with the Chargers in 2017 before being traded to the Tennessee Titans for a 6th Round pick in 2020. As a free agent King signed with the Texans and played the 2021 and 2022 seasons in Houston. During his tenure, he registered the following stat line:

Games: 95
Tackles: 426
INTs: 9
PD: 33
Sacks: 8.5
TD: 2

King is known for his versatility. The ability to play both inside and outside, but also his ability to return both kicks and punts. King has two punt return touchdowns in his career, and his experience in this realm gives the Steelers options on game days.

The Steelers added to a position of need with a veteran player who provides quality depth and versatility. Throw in the fact King is ecstatic to be in Pittsburgh, and it seems like a win-win situation for both parties.
