A Letter From the Editor: And to all a good night

It was Christmas morning, and all through the house, plenty of creatures were stirring, much louder than a mouse.

Okay, enough of that.

As I write this Letter From the Editor, it is Christmas Eve and my five elves, not so tiny anymore, are abuzz in the house beaming with excitement for the holiday. Can’t say I blame them, considering how much I love the entire holiday season.

But, for what seems like a lifetime ago, I too share in their excitement…but for different reasons. The lifetime which has passed is how long it has felt since the Steelers didn’t just win, but had a decisive victory. You’d have to go back quite a ways before finding another lop-sided win for the black-and-gold, and I’m not about to dive into those numbers. I’ll leave that for those like Dave Schofield and his Nerds of Steel. But it had been a while since we weren’t left on the edge of our seats waiting with baited breath, and near heart attacks, watching the Steelers eek out another win.

It was fun watching the game with my family and they got to enjoy the jubilance of high-fiving one another after the Steelers scored more than 30 points and provided plenty of splash on the defensive side of the football. It was such a great win, you’d think the Steelers fan base would be beaming with delight as they celebrate the team’s latest win, and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Wrong.

The vast majority of this fickle fan base aren’t just basking in the glow of Mason Rudolph and George Pickens’ great performances Saturday, they are bickering over which quarterback has looked the best in the post-Matt Canada offense, and who should start vs. the Seattle Seahawks in Week 17.

These are all valid points, and worthy of discussion, but can’t we, Steelers fans, just enjoy a moment before that discussion takes place? Must we take to Twitter/X to lambaste other fans for their opinions? I know, what I’m asking is for people to be able to put their own particular narratives aside and just enjoy a win, but is that too much to ask?

The Steelers fan base is passionate, and that is what I love about it, but let’s not overlook the good times. Just the other day on my Let’s Ride podcast I talked about how crazy it is the Steelers only have two games left guaranteed on their schedule. The offseason is so long, and we long for the regular season so much, we can’t just overlook these rare moments in the season when the Steelers outperform the lowered expectations.

Not me. Not today.

As for me, I’m going to enjoy this holiday, and I’m going to enjoy the hell out of the latest Steelers win. It means another meaningful game coming up Sunday and I’m not about to let anyone change my mind in that regard.

With that being said, I hope everyone who has helped support Steel Curtain Network in this venture has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Don’t celebrate the holidays? I wish you nothing but the best regardless!

…and to all a good night.
