3 Pivots For New York Yankees After Missing Out On Yoshinobu Yamamoto

Amazingly enough, the New York Yankees have not spent a dollar in free agency this offseason.

Despite being inactive in free agency, the Yankees might have made the best move thus far acquiring Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres. New York was also aggressively pursuing Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto before he landed with Shohei Ohtani in Los Angeles.

Gerrit Cole is coming off a Cy Young campaign in 2023 while Carlos Rodon will look to bounce back from an injury-riddled one. Who could be next in the rotation? Now that Yamamoto is off the board, the Yankees could be looking to pivot and these three names should be on the radar.

3. Jordan Montgomery

The fit is a good one, there is familiarity there from both sides but it seems unlikely that Montgomery will return to New York. This does not mean that the Yankees should not make the call.

Montgomery was traded to St. Louis by the Yankees in 2022 in a deal that included Harrison Bader. The Cardinals eventually sent him to Texas last season, where he pitched to a 2.79 ERA for the eventual World Series champions.

At 31 years old, the left-hander can demand a contract of five or six years for well over $20 million annually. Montgomery is going to get it somewhere but it remains unknown if he is open to the idea of returning to the Yankees.

2. Brandon Woodruff

Woodruff remains one of the more intriguing options on the open market. He has suffered injuries over the last few years that have kept him out of action but has been extremely effective when healthy.

Last season, Woodruff made just 11 starts and pitched to a 2.28 ERA. The 30-year-old right-hander could take a short-term deal to prove that he can stay healthy before signing one more in his career. If this is the case, there might be better fits than the Yankees but then again, they are looking to win right away this year.

Woodruff would bring great experience and power to a pitching staff that already has plenty of both. The win-now mode for the Yankees would continue with a pitcher like Woodruff.

1. Blake Snell

There is alleged interest from Snell to play for the Yankees. This was according to an inside source and Snell has not said it publicly. Could this be a way to spark interest and drive the price up? Potentially.

Either way, Snell is the reigning NL Cy Young winner. If he signed with the Yankees, then both reigning champs would be in the Bronx in 2024.

Snell has had an interesting career. He is not known as a pitcher that can go deep into games. Snell gets into many deep counts and walks a ton over the course of nine innings. He is a pitcher that works into trouble but has been able to get out, mainly via the strikeout. The swing-and-miss rate from Snell was incredible last season.

This could make some teams nervous, especially when discussing a contract that could be for up to six years.

The Yankees remain players for Snell due to their drive to win in 2024.
