Chelsea vs Luton Town Recap | Matchday 3

Chelsea Football Club performed superbly on their home turf of Stamford Bridge this past Friday against the newly promoted Luton Town. Last week’s 3-1 embarrassment against West Ham left many fans worrying about a potential repeat of last year’s horrible season, even though it was only matchday two. Even after over $1 billion spent on signings, Chelsea seemed destined to struggle again. However, Chelsea were able to take care of business against the Hatters.

Raheem Sterling had a brilliant performance, notching the first two goals for the Blues in this matchup. The first one displayed a magnificent dribbling effort on the right side of the box where the winger weaved his way through defenders and slotted it to the back of the net in the bottom left corner.

Sterling’s second goal had great lead-up play with Moisés Caicedo finding Malo Gusto on the right side of the pitch. Gusto immediately fired a low cross into the middle of the box where Sterling was waiting to grab goal number two of the match.

Despite joining from Manchester City for about $60 million last season, Sterling’s performances have left much to be desired. After a poor preseason, many fans were ready to turn on the winger, but his early season form has proved them wrong. He has arguably been the best Chelsea performer in the opening stages of the season and is finally showing the quality that Chelsea saw when bringing him in.

Another signing proving their worth this game was new Chelsea signing Nicolas Jackson, who scored his first goal with the club to complete the victory. The goal was created by none other than the man of the match, Raheem Sterling, who assisted with a beautiful cross just outside the right side of the box into a perfect spot for Jackson to score.

Jackson has looked like the complete package since his transfer from Villarreal but has lacked a bit of a clinical touch. Fans are hoping that this goal will open the floodgates for Jackson, who Mauricio Pochettino has touted as having the ability to “become one of the greatest Premier League strikers of all time.”

Premier League record signing Moises Caicedo also started his first game in a Chelsea shirt after a disappointing debut against West Ham. He bounced back sensationally, anchoring Chelsea’s midfield. He had a 100% tackle success rate, 3 interceptions, 2 blocks, and was dribbled past ZERO times. This is the ability Chelsea expect from the Ecuadorian midfielder, and hope he will continue to show as he gains chemistry with Enzo Fernandez and, eventually, fellow new signing Romeo Lavia.

Friday’s win was huge for Chelsea as they hope to get back on track. The team had eight shots on goal while Luton only had one and the possession was 68% to 32%, favoring the Blues. Chelsea’s record is now filled up with 1s at 1-1-1 and they will face AFC Wimbledon at home on Wednesday in the second round of the EFL Cup before facing Nottingham Forest on the weekend.
