We are in the throes of the “hard pass” portion of the Steelers offseason

The Steelers’ 2023 season is officially over, but the 2024 offseason got into full swing immediately after that.

You know what that means, right? There is nothing but endless speculation about players and coaches becoming part of the organization before the start of the 2024 campaign next September.

You know what else that means? Someone will jump on Twitter/X or in the comment section of some article and say “hard pass” to (insert the latest person linked to the Steelers here).

For example, should the Steelers bring in Steve Wilks, the recently fired 49ers defensive coordinator, and make him a consultant/assistant coach? Hard pass.

Should the Steelers pursue Russell Wilson to be their starting quarterback in 2024? Hard pass.

How about veteran Kirk Cousins? Hard pass.

What about Baker Mayfield? Hard pass.

So you’re saying Pittsburgh should stick with Kenny Pickett for one more year? Nope, hard pass.

So you’re telling me you want the Steelers to find a way to re-sign Mason Rudolph and let him legitimately compete for the starting job next training camp? Are you kidding me? Hard pass.

What about the draft? Bo Nix? Hard pass.

Michael Penix? Hard pass.

What if the Steelers could move up in the 2024 NFL Draft and have a shot at Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels? Three hard passes.

OK, back to current NFL quarterbacks. Are you saying you want Pittsburgh to make a trade for the Bears’ Justin Fields? Hard pass.

I’m just going to throw this out there: What about if Ben Roethlisberger comes out of retirement for one more year? Oh, so you’d take that, would you? It’s too bad he can no longer throw a hard pass.

Should the Steelers hire Arthur Smith to be their next offensive coordinator? Hard pass? Too late.

Do you want the Steelers to extend receiver Diontae Johnson beyond the 2024 campaign? Hard pass.

How about the latest mock draft where Pittsburgh addresses (insert specific position here) in the first round with (insert specific prospect here)? Hard pass.

How about Hines Ward as the next receivers coach? Hard pass.

How about the no-nonsense Zach Azzanni for the role? Do you think he can get George Pickens to mature a little? Hard pass. OK, but they already hired him.

Do you want Pickens to remain in Pittsburgh? Hard pass.

So you’re saying the Steelers should trade him? Nope, hard pass.

How about an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii next year? Hard pass.

If the Steelers were granted the gift of traveling back in time to 1983, would you want them to draft Dan Marino? Hard pass. Why? Oh, you’re a Penn State fan and would prefer that they select Todd Blackledge, instead? But he eventually found his way to Pittsburgh in the late-’80s and….you know what? Nevermind.

I’m going to stop writing this article and go enjoy some hard seltzer. What’s that? You take a hard pass on all hard seltzers? I’m not surprised.
