Steelers release wide receivers Hakeem Butler and Cody White with waived/injured designations

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made two roster moves as they prepare for their final preseason game Thursday night. As previously reported, the Steelers signed wide receiver Aron Cruickshank and have also added linebacker Kuony Deng. For the corresponding roster moves, which may come as a surprise to fans, the Steelers waived/injured wide receivers Hakeem Butler and Cody White.

In the Steelers second preseason game on Saturday night, Hakeem Butler was not dressed and did not participate due to what was believed to be an undisclosed injury. As for Cody White, he played 32 offensive snaps and 7 more snaps on special teams on Saturday night and had no reported injury following the game. Hakeem Butler was signed to the Steelers this offseason following the XFL season where he was a standout member of the St. Louis Battlehawks. Cody White had been with the Steelers either on the practice squad or 53-man roster since 2020. White had appeared in 16 games for the Steelers, 15 of which were in 2021, where he had six receptions for 35 yards.

With both Butler and White receiving the waived/injured designation, teams will have 24 hours to make a claim on either player or else they will revert back to the Steelers injured reserve list with the opportunity to work out an injury settlement over the next five days.

New wide receiver Aron Cruickshank what is an undrafted free agent of the Chicago Bears following the 2023 NFL draft. Playing five seasons at Rutgers University, Cruikshank had 103 receptions for 908 yards and five touchdowns as well as 360 rushing yards and an additional three touchdowns.

Kuony Deng was a 2022 undrafted free agent of the Atlanta Falcons and spent part of the 2022 season on the Chicago Bears practice squad. Playing three seasons at the University of California, Deng appeared in 19 games with 156 tackles, 3.5 sacks, eight passes defensed, and two forced fumbles.
