Pair of Steelers receive national attention for on-field play

The month of September has been good to the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially from a win-loss record standpoint. However, it has also been good for two members of the team as it pertains to their stellar play on the field.

The largest accolades went to T.J. Watt, who was named Defensive Player of the Year for the month of September.

How good has Watt been in September? Well…he’s been really good.

Watt leads the NFL with six sacks through three games, and he also leads the league in quarterback hits with 12, and is tied for the lead with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

The Steelers official website also had these stats to add:

“Six sacks, 11 tackles, nine of them solo stops, 12 quarterback hits, five tackles for a loss, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries, including one he returned 16 yards for a touchdown. And, to top it off, he became the Steelers all-time sack leader in September.

“Watt is the first player to record six sacks and register a defensive touchdown in a team’s first three games of a season since 1982, when the individual sack became an official recognized statistic by the NFL.”

This is the fourth time Watt has won the honor, previously doing so during the 2020 season (September and November) and once in 2019 (November).

Watt isn’t the only player to receive an award, linebacker Cole Holcomb was given the NFL’s “Way to Play” award.  This recognizes a player who demonstrated proper technique while making plays.

This per the Steelers official website:

“Holcomb is the recipient for his play in the third quarter of the win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Holcomb dropped back in coverage and broke up a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo to Davante Adams. Holcomb was able to read Garoppolo’s eyes and came in to break up the pass, using just his shoulder to hit Adams. Holcomb had his head up for the play, knowing where he was hitting.”

Congratulations to both Holcomb and Watt, as they are both deserving of their honors.
