Cam Heyward back with the Steelers for Week 3 of OTAs

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the third, and final, week of Phase III of their Organized Team Activities (OTAs), and this is before next week’s mandatory minicamp. One of the mainstays within the organization who hasn’t been present for Weeks 1-2 has been team captain Cam Heyward.

Heyward has been holding out, reportedly looking for a new contract extension with him entering a contract year in 2024. While there might be an extension in his future, nothing has been made official in this regard, Heyward is back with the team for the final week of OTAs.

This per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

With four days of workouts in Week 3 of OTAs, the Steelers spent Monday doing team-building exercises with the team attending Kennywood. Tuesday they get back to work on the practice field, and Heyward seems to be ready to rejoin his teammates as they prepare for the final stretch of offseason workouts before they report to training camp in July at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

Heyward absolutely is worthy of an extension, but deciphering what that will look like is another story altogether. Nonetheless, having Heyward back is a welcome sight for the Steelers organization. Heyward is coming off an injury-plagued season where he landed on Injured Reserve (IR) after tearing his groin in Week 1, which required surgery. He then had another surgery in the offseason to help the healing process, and the hope is he is back at 100% health before the 2024 season.

Will a deal get done? That has yet to be seen, but getting Heyward back in the fold is always a good thing for the black-and-gold. Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the rest of the 2024 offseason.
