4 players mentioned by Mike Tomlin following Sunday’s training camp practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers took to the practice field at St. Vincent College in a padded practice ahead of their day off on Monday. After practice, head coach Mike Tomlin briefly addressed the media. Although there were only two questions asked by those in attendance, I was able to scrape enough for a players mentioned article by also including players Tomlin brought up in his opening remarks. Otherwise these are players where a specific question was asked during the Q&A period.

Nate Herbig, Keeanu Benton, & Cam Heyward

As is typically the case this time of year, injuries are one of the biggest concerns during preparation for the upcoming season. Coach Tomlin gave updates on several players at the end of his opening statement including Nate Herbig, Keeanu Benton, and Cam Heyward.

“Nate Herbig went down with the shoulder and practice he’s going to be evaluated. Obviously, we had bumps and bruises associated with play. Keeanu Benton went down in the game with an ankle that could be described as day to day, we’ll see how that leads us. Some other guys obviously were limited or did not participate. Cam Heyward’s not here today. He’s sick. And so, we thought, you know, allow him to get right and maybe protect some of the others in the process.”

Isaiahh Loudermilk

While a lot has been asked about the rookies and second-year players, sometimes it’s a player going into their third season that needs to make a significant leap. Coach Tomlin was asked where Isaiahh Loudermilk has grown the most and what he thinks of his camp so far.

“You know, the skill development relative to the position to hand usage. The professional things coupled with defensive line play obviously. He’s an imposing figure and strong young man and that’s always been a component of his game, but I think he’s continually grown and evolved from a fine motor skill perspective in hand usage.”
