2024 NFL Draft Player Profile: Notre Dame OT Joe Alt

We are excited about our draft coverage here at FFSN this year, as we are adding something new to the fold. Between now and the NFL Draft, I will be writing individual player profiles on many of this year’s top prospects. Today, we continue the series with Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt.

Each of these breakdowns will include a brief background on the player, an in-depth scouting report, and a projection as to where he is likely to be selected in the NFL Draft. All of these articles can be found on our main FFSN NFL feed. Be sure to share these breakdowns with your fellow draft buddies on social media!

Bio and Profile

Height: 6’9″
Weight: 321 lbs

Alt comes from an athletic background, as both his dad and brother were standout collegiate athletes. In fact, his father, Steve Alt, was taken in the first round of the draft by the Chiefs back in 1984. Joe took over the starting left tackle job at Notre Dame part-way through his freshman season, and he never looked back. He enters the draft having come off a season in which he was a first-team All-American as well as a finalist for the Outland Trophy.

Scouting Report

Alt is one of the cleanest, most complete tackle prospects I have ever evaluated. Penei Sewell is easily the highest-graded lineman I have ever evaluated, but Alt may be the next-highest. For a tackle with his height, he does a surprisingly good job lowering his pad level as a run blocker and pushing defenders off the ball. His mobility is fantastic, and his first-step quickness is elite for a prospect of his size. He is mechanically sound as well, displaying great footwork, landing accurate punches, and possessing outstanding awareness.

Alt was one of the leaders of the Notre Dame offense and the heart and soul of the offensive line. There are no red flags off the field, and he always brings his A game. While I believe he is capable of playing right tackle, why ruin a good thing on the left side? Personally, I would let him be on the left side and not mess with anything. With the bloodlines, athleticism, and consistency Alt possesses, he is a Day 1 starter at left tackle with All-Pro potential. It is hard to imagine a scenario in which Alt does not carve out a long NFL career.

Draft Projection

I hate being dogmatic about a draft pick that makes too much sense, as typically, it does not come to fruition. However, I cannot help but think the Titans at Pick 7 would be interested in him. If the Chargers remain at Pick 5, I could see them as a potential landing spot, but Tennessee needs immediate help at left tackle, and Alt is capable of coming in and starting from Day 1. Outside of Tennessee, though, it is difficult to find a landing spot for him, as the Bears would be the next likely option at Pick 9. I just do not see a world in which Alt falls that far. He is one of my five highest-rated players in this class.
