Mr. December: Matt LaFleur and Jordan Love Eye Playoff Push

There is something about the month of December for Packers head coach Matt LaFleur that he even received a nickname shortly after Sunday Night’s game – Mr. December.

The 44-year-old Green Bay Packers head coach is 16-0 in the month of December and stays perfect after defeating the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs, 27-19 at Lambeau Field. With a three-game winning streak, the team sets its sights on a playoff push with just five games remaining.

Think Fast: Playoffs are a possibility

“Rollercoaster” loosely describes the Packers’ season. After starting off 3-6, the Packers have won three straight against the Chargers (23-20), Lions (29-22), and most recently, the Chiefs (27-19). With these three victories, the team is sitting at 6-6, and suddenly the playoffs do not feel like a fever dream.

The odds for a playoff push is extremely likely, given the remaining schedule that the Packers face:

Week 14: at New York Giants – Giants have a 4-8 record and are 3rd in the NFC East

Week 15: home vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Bucs have a 5-7 record and are 2nd in the NFC South

Week 16: at Carolina Panthers – Panthers have a 1-11 record and are last in the NFC South

Week 17: at Minnesota Vikings – Vikings have a 6-6 record and are 2nd in the NFC North

Week 18: home vs. Chicago Bears – Bears have a 4-8 record and are last in the NFC North

Combined Record of Opponents: 20 Wins, 40 Losses

Jordan Love’s Sudden Revival:

The Packers spent a first-round selection on Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft (Round 1: Pick 26). Since then, Love has been a backup, getting his starting opportunity this season with the departure of long-time veteran and franchise leader Aaron Rodgers.

Love has experienced ups and downs in his first full season as the Packers’ signal caller, and head coach Matt LaFleur has been coaching him every step of the way. For LaFleur, offense is not just a job; it is his calling.

Since LaFleur became the head coach for the Packers in 2019, he has compiled an impressive 53 wins and 25 losses, a .671 winning percentage. LaFleur won 13 games in each of his first three seasons before struggling the final two, with eight wins in 2022 and so far six wins in 2023. Without LaFleur and his offensive pedigree, Jordan Love would not be as successful as he has been.

Over the last three games, Love has been dealing.

  • 857 Passing Yards
  • 8 Touchdowns
  • 0 Interceptions

Yes, Mr. Love, the team is indeed rolling now. Watch out, the Packers may be heading back into the playoffs.

Love’s Statistics (Season):

Passing Yards: 2,866

Touchdowns: 22

Interceptions: 10

QBR Rating: 58.3 (15th in the NFL)

Final Thoughts:

While it’s uncertain whether the Green Bay Packers will continue their winning streak, one aspect remains consistent: their undefeated record in December over the last five seasons. This impressive performance could be a significant turnaround for the once-struggling club. If LaFleur and Love continue to executes effectively, more victories are likely before the regular season concludes.
