Survivor Series Flashback: Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage Prepare to Explode (1988)

The second Survivor Series in 1988 featured the Megapowers duo of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage on the same team.

The top two stars of the WWF formed an unstoppable team, especially with Miss Elizabeth in their corner.

Her timely intervention helped the Megapowers defeat the Megabucks (Ted DiBiase & Andre the Giant) in the main event of the first SummerSlam in August 1988.

The next major obstacle for the Megapowers was the Twin Towers team of Big Bossman & Akeem, managed by “The Doctor of Style” Slick. They were the captains of the Survivor Series main event.

I was there at the Richfield (Ohio) Coliseum for the second year in a row. Hogan, Savage, Hercules, Koko B. Ware & Hillbilly Jim battled Bossman, Akeem, Ted DiBiase, King Haku, and Terry “The Red Rooster” Taylor.

Hogan and Savage rallied from a 2-on-4 deficit to vanquish their opponents, but Savage got visibly angry when he saw Hogan celebrating after the match with Elizabeth.

The fuse was lit for the Megapowers to explode at WrestleMania V.

DUMPING THE CHAMPS

The 20-man tag team match included one of the most bizarre managerial decisions in wrestling history.

For the second straight year, this match featured outstanding teams like The British Bulldogs, The Rockers, The Brain Busters, and The Rougeau Brothers.

The captains were The Powers of Pain and WWF tag team champions Demolition, who were managed by Mr. Fuji.

Late in the match, Fuji turned against his own team and caused them to lose. Did I mention they were the champions?

Ax & Smash left Fuji in a heap on the floor, but then Warlord & Barbarian picked him up and hired him immediately. They polished off The Conquistadores and won the match.

I had floor seats in the 10th row, and this drama took place right in front of me.

OTHER MATCHES

The Honky Tonk Man opened the show again, but he wasn’t the Intercontinental champion anymore. The Ultimate Warrior had steamrolled him at SummerSlam in less than 30 seconds.

Warrior pinned Greg Valentine and Ron Bass to survive the opening match.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts faced even greater odds, as he was left alone to face Andre the Giant, Rick Rude, Dino Bravo and Mr. Perfect.

Roberts pinned Rude, and Andre got disqualified for choking Jake into unconsciousness. Perfect and Bravo then scored an easy victory.
