Sox Populi 2024 White Sox Minor League All-Star Team: George Wolkow

George Wolkow is a local product, as he was drafted out of Downers Grove North High School in the seventh round of the 2023 draft. After getting his feet wet after the draft, in 2024 the 18-year-old retured to the ACL White Sox to open the season, where he made quite the splash. As a result, it did not take long for Wolkow earn a promotion to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, where he remained for the rest of the season.

Wolkow’s immense power, which MLB Pipeline conservatively estimates as a 60 but will likely get better, makes him one of the most interesting prospects in the system. I am in no way comparing Wolkow to Aaron Judge, but in 2017, MLB Pipeline rated Judge’s power at 60 and his hit tool at 45. Right now, Wolkow has a 60 power tool and a 40 hit tool, so one really should take these ratings with a grain of salt. The 6´7´´ Wolkow hit several towering home runs, and he finished the season with 13 homers in 335 at-bats.

Wolkow was quite streaky at the plate, as he had spurts where he could not be stopped — but also had a few extended slumps. Overall, in 15 games with the ACL White Sox, Wolkow had a .333/.433/.561 slash line, which was terrific. In a much larger sample size with Kannapolis, Wolkow slashed .241/.342/.428. At a very young age, Wolkow has shown great plate discipline and the ability to drive the ball. From this point forward, being able to put the bat on the ball more consistently will be important for his development.

Despite being a raw product, MLB Pipeline has Wolkow as its No. 7 White Sox prospect, which is great to see, especially given his age. Wolkow is a left-handed hitter whose potential comparison could be Kyle Schwarber — but much better as and outfield defender.

The White Sox have not developed a player quite like that in a long time, but as MLB Pipeline says, “His ceiling is as huge as his frame.”
