What’s in a Decoy? Things are getting ridiculous!

Earlier this week Cleveland Browns coaches and players were made available in press conferences to the local Cleveland sports media. One of those players available for questions from the media was Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. When the franchise quarterback of any team speaks what he says becomes news. Whether it is fair or not, it is how things are in the NFL and in the sports world. Watson does come with controversy, but what he said this week is not one of the controversies.

Watson was asked at the press conference on a specific play in the 4th quarter of Sunday’s game at Huntington Bank Field. The Browns had possession on a 4th and 1 yard to go. The play called was a run pass option. The primary read was a slant route that wasn’t open. Watson did not see tight end Jordan Akins running open in the flat. Watson did not throw to Akins, he tucked the ball and tried to run for the first down. He failed to make the conversion. And the ball went to the New York Giants. In the press conference Watson referred to Akins as a decoy. But he also said more than that and that is what’s being overlooked.

Now to be clear, I feel that he could have used a better choice in words on describing Akins role in that play. And Deshaun should have thrown it to him. But Watson also said that there this a lot more going on than what is seen on tape. That is true, and social media is filled with armchair quarterbacks that uses misleading still pictures to misrepresent a play. And Watson is not and was not the only quarterback that happens to on the internet.

I am all for fair criticism of coaches and players when it is warranted. However, in last week’s game against the Giants, the game did not come down to that one play. The Browns as a team missed on many other opportunities to make a play towards a win. And those opportunities were missed by the Browns as a team. Fans and media want to get hung up on Watson’s choice of a word. They are free to do that. But what Watson and the Browns need to do is to move on to the next game. And so should the fans along with the media. Because the NFL doesn’t allow do overs.
