Kyren Williams: Underrated Force Reshaping Rams’ Rush Since Gurley

If you would ask an average NFL football fan who Kyren Williams is, they would most likely struggle to give you the correct answer. Over the last several weeks, Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams has proven to be ‘the guy’ at the position.

On Thursday Night Football, Williams rushed for 104 yards on 22 carries and registered a touchdown in a 30-22 victory over the New Orleans Saints. At the beginning of the season, the Rams struggled to establish a running game due to a multitude of injuries, along with slowly working Williams back into the mix due to his injury from the previous year.

The former Notre Dame product and 5th round selection in 2022, went through some unfortunate injuries that have plagued him over his short NFL career. In the summer of 2022, just after he was drafted by the Rams, Williams suffered a broken foot in practice and had to undergo surgery. After overcoming this injury, and excited and ready to get back onto the field, Williams’ mental toughness would be tested once again after getting injured on the first kick return of the game, placing him on the injured reserve shortly thereafter.

His 2022 season sadly was not what he expected for his rookie campaign, and he finished with 35 rushing attempts for 139 yards, along with 9 receptions for 76 yards and no touchdowns. He played in 10 games but did not start a single game in year one.

The greatest thing about the game of football is that one year you could be unlucky and then the next year you can be the stud that the franchise thought you would be. This is the case for Williams as he has settled into his role in year two under Sean McVay and has provided a spark for his football team.

Williams’ season statistics as of week 16 is 208 carries for 1,057 yards and 9 total touchdowns. He is the first 1,000 yard rusher for the Rams since Todd Gurley in 2018 and he missed four games in 2023 – quite an impressive feat.

If you are the type who is a casual football watcher, or if you are like Saints defensive end Cam Jordan, who did not know who Kyren Williams was, you are going to hear his name a lot more in the coming years. He is exactly the type of athlete and person the Rams need in their building. Not only is he an impact player, but he is also genuinely a good guy. His hard work ethic and ability to overcome key injuries and adversity make him someone to root for.
