MLB Free Agents 2025: Top Options On The Mound After Zack Wheeler’s Extension

Zack Wheeler recently agreed to a massive contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies. This begs the question, with Wheeler off the market, who are the top free agent pitchers in the 2025 class.

Wheeler’s extension is the largest extended contract in baseball history at three years, $126 million. The right hander will be the ace in Philly for years to come. Now, there is one less arm available in what will be a loaded class next offseason.

Honorable Mention: There are many unrestricted free agents hitting the open market but there are also some notable player options. Of course, they are unlikely to exercise them. This includes reigning AL Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole. It is clear that Cole is not leaving the Bronx. Robbie Ray is in the same boat. Max Scherzer and Charlie Morton will also be available but with their age being a factor, they will not be at the top of the list.

3. Max Fried

Max Fried made 14 starts last year after suffering an injury but he enters a contract year with high hopes. He will be the best left-hander on the market and should demand a massive deal. In 2022, Fried finished second in Cy Young voting, going 14-7 with a 2.58 ERA. He was on a similar pace last season before his injury. Fried was 8-1 with a 2.55 ERA on a loaded Atlanta Braves’ team. Atlanta made a deal to add Chris Sale this year, showing even more that they are all in. Fried is not extended yet and if he hits the open market, will gain plenty of interest.

2. Shane Bieber

Shane Bieber remains an interesting option because it is likely that he is dealt at the trade deadline. The Cleveland Guardians did not find a trade partner this offseason, which means they cold look further this summer if the year goes south. Bieber will turn 29 in May and is in the prime of his career. The former Cy Young winner comes with some injury concerns, as he has made 30 or more starts just twice in his career. Bieber is still one of the best strikeout pitchers in baseball and can be a top-of-the-rotation arm for years to come.

1. Corbin Burnes

Corbin Burnes is another former Cy Young winner that will be available next offseason — for now. The difference between Burnes and Bieber is that he has already been dealt. The Milwaukee Brewers sent their former ace to the Baltimore Orioles this offseason. With a new owner with deep pockets in Baltimore, fans are hoping that Burnes will be there long-term. For now, we have to act as if he will be a free agent and if he is, there is little doubt that he will be the best available.
