Why Now Is The Right Time To Move Mike Trout To A Corner Outfield Position

At the end of Mike Trout’s career, everyone around baseball is unfortunately going to be left wondering just how great he could have been if he had stayed healthy.

Trout has played just 266 out of what will be 648 games since the start of 2021 and hasn’t really been the same since winning his 3rd AL MVP back in 2019.

On Monday before the Angels’ 8-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox, Mike Trout spoke with the media signaling that his iconic run in center field could be coming to an end.

“I think everything’s on the table,” Trout said. “Ultimately, my goal is to be in that batter’s box, in the field every single day. Whether that’s moving to a corner or DHing more, I’ll leave it up to the front office to come up with a plan.

Being under contract until 2023, it was inevitable that Trout would eventually have to move to a corner.

“I know I have a certain amount of years on my deal, and I knew when I signed my contract, I’d eventually move to a corner. But is it next year? I don’t know. But we’ll have conversations,” Trout added.

With Trout being under contract until the end of the 2023 season, now is the time for him to move into a corner.

No team paying a player almost $40 million a year can afford to have said player not on the field and if a positional move could help Trout stay healthy, the Angels should certainly act on that.

Left Field seems to be the most realistic spot for Trout to slide into as he has made 77 starts in left over his 14-year career.

Moving Trout to DH could be an option but he has hit just .214 as a DH and taking him off the field would be subtracting an elite defender out of your outfield.

If there is any time to make the move, it is now.

The Angels have started to see the foundations of a young core form with shortstop Zach Neto and catcher Logan O’Hoppe having breakout seasons, keeping one of the greatest of all time on the field would be a huge boost for an organization searching for hope.
