Sox Populi 2024 White Sox Minor League All-Star Team: Garrett Schoenle

Garrett Schoenle
Left-Handed Relief Pitcher
2024 SSS Top Prospect Ranking N/R
Birmingham Barons

Drafted in 2017 by the Cincinnati Reds, Garrett Schoenle is a highly efficient left-handed reliever that was signed by the Chicago White Sox in 2021. He started off strong with the ACL White Sox, and moved up to the the Low-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers to begin the 2022 season, where he achieved a 1.57 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in 23 innings.

Fluctuating between a reliever and a starter, Schoenle struggled to settle in with the High-A Winston-Salem Dash after being promoted mid-2022, and his ERA ballooned to a 5.67 in 46 innings. Garrett ended the year with the Double-A Birmingham Barons, and was more controlled with a 2.25 ERA across 16 innings. He stuck with the Barons for the entire 2023 season, and his control was nowhere to be found. Schoenle finished with a 6.22 ERA and a rough 5.28 FIP. The big killer, however, was his control: Even though Schoenle was striking out a lot of batters (10.26 K/9), his walk rate (13.9%) caused a lot of problems. It’s always the walks.

Schoenle seemingly made some tweaks in the offseason after a rocky 2023 season, because he came back in 2024 as a brand-new pitcher. He was assigned back to the Winston-Salem Dash to begin the season, and while he did still struggle a bit with walks at times (12.5% BB%), his 33% K% over his 12 innings helped maintain a 2.25 ERA. This performance got him promoted to the Birmingham Barons where he spent the majority of the season.

Upon advancing, Schoenle was was even better in Double-A. In 55 innings with Birmingham this year, he reduced his walk rate by nearly 42%, and held up an excellent 31% strikeout rate — he also left runners on base about 82% of the time. He ended the season with a 1.64 ERA for the Barons and a 2.06 FIP. He made a quick pit stop in June, appearing in one start for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights where he pitched three scoreless innings alongside four Ks and one walk. Oh, and in that very game he was PART OF A NO-HITTER! (Get this, Schoenle was also part of a Double-A no-hitter this season as well!)

It seems like Schoenle has been overlooked, and if he can keep this momentum heading into 2025, he could be a weapon on the South Side sooner than later. A 1.67 ERA across 70 innings shows that Schoenle has what it takes to continue to improve. Time will tell where Garrett will start the season, but I look forward to watching him progress next year.
