A Non Boxing Fans Reaction To The Paul-Tyson Fight Card

The card of Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson is probably the first fight card that I have watched fully in my entire life.

I am semi-familiar with boxing, my dad would watch it when I was little but being under eight years old, I never really tuned in.

When former social media star Jake Paul and 52-year-old Mike Tyson announced they were going to square off in a boxing match, just like the rest of the world my interest peaked.

Coming into the night, I knew nothing about any of the other fights that were happening but I figured if I was going to do it, I needed to do it fully.

The first fight of the night was probably the least entertaining to me and it wasn’t even because of the actual fighting.

If we’re talking about pure boxing, Paul vs Tyson was easily the worst fight of the night but the entertainment value carried it for me.

When Neeraj Goyat took down Whindersson Nunes it was pretty clear who was the Brazilian social media star and who was the actual fighter.

As soon as Mario Barrios and Abel Ramos stepped into the ring, you could simply tell the level of boxing jumped through the roof.

Coming in and during the first few rounds, I thought Barrios was going to mop the floor with Ramos and the fight wouldn’t even be close to the twelve rounds it eventually went.

In the middle rounds, when Ramos came out strong and eventually had a knockdown, I was shocked.

However, I wasn’t surprised to see Barrios come out and close the fight strong enough to salvage his title.

I would have liked to see a result but still a very entertaining fight.

The very clear winner of the night to me was the fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.

I thought this fight brought the best entertaining value of any fight on this card by far.

Naturally, I started to pull for Taylor because she walked out to Awake My Soul by Hillsong Worship and had a verse from the book of Joshua on the back of her jacket.

The two-minute rounds in this fight created so much action and it was amazing, the entire time, the two were swinging and it made for must-see TV.

I don’t really have much of a take on the headbutting situation, however, I don’t think any points should have been deducted like they were because to a casual it seemed that both were doing it.

The cut that Serrano took was insane. The fact that she stayed in and continued the fight after enduring that was one of the greatest displays of toughness I’ve seen in over fifteen years of watching sports.

As the two continued to go at it, I once again didn’t know who I thought should win. I know there was a ton of controversy about the result but here is the way I saw it.

This fight was so good to me, I thought they both deserved to win, much like the commentator on Netflix said, I don’t think you can call this the “fight of the year” and then also call it a robbery.

I felt that no matter if Taylor or Serrano won, it would have been a valid result, they definitely both deserved to win that fight.

Something that absolutely shocked me about this fight was the manner of the interviews after the fight specifically from Serrano and her team.

As someone who grew up watching the four major sports, to hear that kind of language in interviews was stunning.

Seeing Taylor be called a “dirty fighter” multiple times while she was standing right there was a wild spectacle.

However, as previously mentioned, this was the fight of the night by far, this is insanely enjoyable.

Kane’s rating 10/10

As for the main event, this honestly went about as expected. Thinking back on it, I don’t know why a 58-year-old boxing a social media sensation had as much hype as it did no matter who the two were.

Right when I saw Tyson, it was clear that he was going to run out of gas quick and that is exactly what happened.

I like most people really wanted Tyson to win but I knew it wasn’t going to happen. However, I thought Paul fought a really good fight.

After the third round, I realized that the big blows from Tyson were over, even Paul really only had a few great shots.

If the two guys fighting were not named Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, I would have rated this fight about a 2/10.

The rating I’m going to give it is probably way too high in the first place but still, the names and the hype carried it.

Kane Rating – A reluctant 8/10.
